However, once they gain attention with their looks, it’s the substance of their work that gives them staying power. In short, it’s easy to draw a crowd, but keeping them around is more of a challenge.

Imagine you are a Ford engineer and you’ve been hammering for months on the new 5.0-liter Coyote engine for the ’11 Mustang GT. Management ordained that the new V-8 must make 400 hp, the job has to be done in a third less time than normal, costs are limited because this is a high-volume engine for the populist Mustang GT, and you and your team have been working overtime coaxing all the power and efficiency possible from the new design.

Some guys can’t help but take home their work on weekends. In his case, though, it’s not such a bad thing. During the week, Manny Galvan works for Gaudin Ford in Las Vegas, Nevada, handling their specialty Mustang sales. On weekends, he spends his time in the garage working on one of his Mustang projects. “I always look forward to Sundays working in the garage on the Mustangs,” he told us. “It’s a remedy to calm nerves or escape everyday stress.”

Fortunately I didn’t set out with the idea of a tight deadline for our GT500-powered Fox project, the Fox 500. Back when I kicked this car off–in late 2007–the Shelby GT500 was still a new vehicle. Its engine was as rare as a unicorn, and no one had attempted to swap one into anything. As such, I decided early on to take the slow and steady approach.
